 Pakistan Army Ranks

Pakistan Army Ranks are basically based on British Army Ranks structure, although ranks structure for other ranks personnel and insignia are different.

Pakistan Army Ranks are divided into two different kinds such as Officers Ranks beginning from Field Marshal to Second Lieutenant. Similarly, Non-Commissioned Officers ranks begin with Subedar-Major / Risaldar-Major to Sepoy/Soldier and then there are a few other ranks from Battalion Havildar Major to Company Quartermaster Havildar.

Here, BPS refers to Basic Pascale. Salaries of every rank vary accordingly to its BPS. In case of some particular conditions such as posting in War-Zones, a soldier will get few allowances.

Field Marshal: 5 stars

Fields Marshal Ayub khan is the only one who got such a highest rank in the history of Pak Army. He appointed himself as Field Marshal of Pakistan while serving as President of Pakistan. Field marshal is one of the highest ranks of Pakistan Army.

Insignia: One Crossed Baton and Sabre, Crescent and a Star, One Pip

A General commands an Army consists of 500k trained army personnel. Besides this, 4 Stars General can rule the country or can be the Chief of the Joint Staff Committee.

Currently, Gen Nadeem Raza is the CJSC of the Pakistan Army. CJSC leads the meetings and coordinates collective efforts of all the forces including Para-Military forces. However, the chief has no authority of command over different forces. It is nominated by Prime Minister and then finally appointed by the President of Pakistan and has a term length of 3 years.

Lieutenant General: 3 stars

At present there are 29 serving Lieutenant General of Pak Army. It’s one of the Pakistan army ranks that commands a whole corp.

·         Member of NSC (National Security Council)
·         Can have command of Strategic command
·         Can be the Director-General of ISI
·         After retirement, can also serve as Defense Secretary
·         Can also be CJSC of Pak Army

Major General: 2 stars

Insignia: One crossed Baton and Sabre, One Pip

At present there are 188 serving Major Generals of Pakistan Army. It’s the first general rank in Pakistan army ranks.

·         Can have the command of division consist of 5k personnel.
·         He can be the director General of FC, Rangers, or MI (Military Intelligence).
·         A Major General Can be the Principal Staff Officer of Chief of Army Staff.
·         He can be the Commandant of Training or War College.

Brigadier: 1 star

  •        A brigadier commands a brigade of 2000 men
  •          Can be the section In charge in ISI or MI
  •          Brigadier can serve as Commandant of Training College or Instructor in War College
  •          Can act as Military attaché or Military Secretary in PMO

Colonel

Colonel considers as most significant rank as it the driving force of any Army. He commands the platoon or unit consisting of 700-800 men.

·         Can act as staff officer
·         Colonel can serve as Commandant of Training College or Instructor in War College
·         Can act as Military attaché or Military Secretary in PMO
